You are RIGHT ON THE MONEY ... I'm totally flabbergasted at the businesses that have sunk a bunch of money into their site to have little more than a pretty picture on the internet. In addition to a Content Management System, obviously these sites need to be optimized under Google best practices. (We recently ran a three-part series on the pickettwrites blog on this very topic!)
Great minds think alike ... Way to go Rick! :)

Robby,

Thanks for the comment. I agree that the memo itself caused the controversy; it was clumsy and ill-considered.

Still, the thought process behind it was, let's make "Chevy" go away so we can focus on one brand name. While a company should indeed try to control its brand, it's a constant process and if GM wanted to eliminate the Chevy nickname they should have started decades ago, before the moniker had acquired massive equity with the consumer.

Isn't the real problem with this episode the fact that the memo was worthy of being leaked? Companies should work to control their brand. Encouraging employees to call it "Chevrolet" instead of "Chevy" is akin to suggesting that beverage workers stick to "Coca-Cola" over "Coke." (The latter recommendation might make more sense, of course, given the confusion of nomenclature between the soda pop and the illegal narcotic.)

GM even noted that their memo was "poorly worded." Had it been written in a way that embraced whatever positive terms used by the public, it wouldn't be news.

This seems like a communication failure, not a branding faux pas.
